Want a Derby winner? Buy one of these ranches

It takes more than just a great horse to win the Kentucky Derby — it also takes a team of trainers and staff and, of course, the ideal facilities to produce a champion. If you wonder where the next Secretariat could be foaled or which barn might produce the next Seattle Slew, take a look at these Churchill Downs-worthy homes currently for sale on Zillow. All of these homes have luxurious barns and tracks (as well as houses), and a few have even produced racing champions, including the mighty Kelso.

Woodstock Farm Ln, Chesapeake City, MD

Asking price: For sale: $8,995,000

Care to own a historic piece of Chesapeake City real estate? Bohemia Stables is a 700-acre farm that was the training grounds and home of racing champion Kelso, who was nominated for Horse of the Year five times. The listing describes this property as a “true horse farm” in every sense, including multiple breeding and training facilities, ponds, wooded trails and a world-class track. The property includes several tenant houses, the main house of Kelso’s owner, Mrs. Allaire DuPont, pictured at left with Kelso, as well as the final resting place of the legendary race horse.

15400 S US Hwy 301 Summerfield, Fla.

Listed at $35 million on the Summerfield real estate market, this property is by far the most costly as well as the largest on the list. Padua Stables is currently used as a thoroughbred horse farm and breeding center and includes a 3/4-mile dirt track, one-mile turf track and 11 barns with a total of 202 stalls. Also on the 770-acre property are 13 staff houses, a guest house, as well as a gorgeous 7-bedroom, 7.5 bath owner’s residence overlooking the private lake.

2262 Old Keswick Farm, Keswick, Va.

Renowned for breeding and raising some of the finest thoroughbred horses in the industry, this piece of Keswick real estate dates back to Colonial America. Col. Nicholas Meriwether received this land as a allow from King George II and built the original portion of the house in 1736 as a hunting lodge. The main portion of the 7-bedroom, 7.5-bath house was added in 1818, and features 11-foot-high ceilings and a front porch believed to be designed by Thomas Jefferson.

600 N Jackson Rd, Venice, Fla.

This 5-bedroom, 9-bath home and 100-acre estate promises to impress even the “most discriminating” of buyers. The main residence includes a gourmet kitchen, indoor gym, home theatre and great room with 35-foot cathedral ceilings and white marble fireplace. On the grounds are 22 stables, 10 paddocks and a track, as well as pools and tennis courts, two staff apartments and a separate guest house.

16200 Mahaffey Ln, Louisville, Ky.

Unlike a few of the other listings, the premier part of the property is not the 13-plus stall barn and lighted training arena, but its 4-bedroom, 5.5-bath home. The 7,100-square-foot mansion is described as a home straight “out of Architectural Digest” with soaring cathedral ceilings, large windows and an open floor plan. Also included on the estate is a 2,500-sq-foot, 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath guest house. The 299-acre property is listed on the Kentucky real estate market for $5,475,000.

Undisclosed address, Paso Robles CA

This prime piece of Paso Robles real estate was originally developed as the only Kentucky-style thoroughbred farm in the western U.S. Windfall Farms is located on 784 acres and operates as a horse training and boarding facility with a 6-furlong race track, 70 pasture and paddock areas, 17 run-in sheds, covered exercise rings, round pens and a veterinary clinic. The property also has acres of wine-grape vineyards and includes a wine-tasting barn. The main residence was built in 1984 and has 5 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.

2519 McCracken Pike, Versailles, Ky.

This historic estate dates back to 1820 when the main residence was built. The 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom brick manor was completely renovated and restored in 2009. Other period buildings sit on the property, including an original stone carriage house and 5-stall barn, as well as a brand-new 18-stall horse barn with attached apartment. According to the listing, this property has “all the amenities needed for your dream Kentucky estate.”

35438 De Portola Rd, Temecula, Calif.

Hacienda De Endar is one of California’s premier thoroughbred farms, with a 14-stall main barn with attached one-bedroom, one-bath office, as well as another 18 stalls and two tack rooms and eight-stall mare motel. “The Odd Couple” sitcom star Jack Klugman owned the estate in the early 1980s when he was part owner of a race horse named “Jaklin Klugman.” In addition to the 5-bed, 8-bath main house, the property has a pool house, four guest homes, pool and spa, tennis court and golf course.

260 Escondida Rd, Paris, Ky.

This “gorgeous working thoroughbred farm” includes a 28-stall training barn and round pen, an additional 18-stall barn for breeding as well as a 6-stall barn for quarantine. Worried about where the owner will live on the piece of Paris real estate? The 131-acre property also includes a colonial-style 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom house.
