Currents | Goods: Fishs Eddy Offers Dishes From Archives

Robert Wright for The New York Times

“We’ve never, ever had a find like this,” stated Julie Gaines, an owner of Fishs Eddy, of the several thousand plates she recently acquired from the archives of the now-defunct Syracuse China Corporation. Many of them are more than 100 years old. “They had labelled every dish, under the glaze, so it is part of the plate. It might have information about the customer, the date, the color or the name of the person who signed off on the design,” Ms. Gaines said. “We’ll never stumble across a find like this again in this country. It’s all gone.”

Many of the plates were made for churches or organizations like the YMCA; others were private commissions with family monograms. There is even a selection that dates back to when Syracuse was known as the Onondaga Pottery Company.

The plates range from 8 to 12 inches, and no two are alike; prices begin at $35 each, at Fishs Eddy, 889 Broadway (19th Street), (212) 420-9020.
