Sweet Peas, Sleet and the Germinator™.
I got an email newsletter the other day that stated it was time to begin sweet peas. If only. We’re having our first taste of sleet today, in my corner of paradise, but if you are entering your growing season, I’ll pass that timely reminder on to you and content myself that somewhere, someone is enjoying sweet peas right now.
My eye was caught by another headline that ran across my screen today. The blurb beneath it read “I’ve built a kind of seedling Guantanamo which I’ve dubbed the “Germinator.” Why? Two reasons: 1. Damn squirrels and chickens.” I have not caught chicken fever yet, but I certainly have over-indulged my squirrels to the point that they think about my garden their garden. So I took a peek at the Germinator over at Homegrown Evolution. It’s kind of a boxed raised bed with screening on top during warmer periods and vented plexi when it’s cooler. Simple and practical. He’s growing in Southern California, but the idea is very adaptable. If you are started vegetables and running out of space, it’s a great idea.
